January 18

It was cool and sunny when we left our hotel this morning and joined those on the crowded tram. After getting off at the city center we had to catch the No. 40 bus to take us to the Vatican. The trip became more exciting when Dr. Leopardi told us to board the smaller than normal No. 40 bus that showed up. With her “go go go” ringing in our ears all 29 of us made it on the bus making the most of "Italian space.” The short distance from our hotel to the bus stop left us in cool and overcast conditions for the walk to our destination. We spent the morning looking at selections of the Vatican Museums collections, the Raphael rooms and Sistine Chapel being the most memorable. In a display of inconspicuous consumption we ate the snacks we smuggled in before going on to St. Peters and viewing the Pieta by Michelangelo.
The clouds had burned away and the sun had come out by the afternoon.
