January 9 - Siena
The morning started with breakfast as usual and then we boarded a charter bus (waiting for us right outside the hotel) for Siena.
We traveled through the Tuscan countryside to the historic Medieval city. We were dropped off below the old city as tour buses are not allowed up there and walked the rest of the way in. We began in Piazza Publico where Dr. Leopardi gave us the history then we moved into the old city hall building where we saw the allegory of good and bad government paintings by Ambrogio Lorenzetti among other things. We then broke for lunch and regrouped at the Duomo where I gave a lecture on illuminated manuscripts before moving into this glorious cathedral and experiencing the wonders it held. We also had the opportunity to climb to the top and take in the surrounding countryside at twilight. Upon our return to Florence we met another Chapman group for dinner.
